The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) confronts organizations with far-reaching changes that concern not only technical but also social dimensions. Cornelius Klingel (CPC) and Tobias Krafft (Trusted AI) examine in the October 2024 issue of changement! how organizations can successfully shape this change. In doing so, it becomes clear: the success of AI implementations depends largely on how technology and people are brought into harmony.

Two levels of change

AI has an effect on several levels: it changes communication channels, task distributions and incentives, which significantly shapes how people work together in organizations. At the same time, existing structures influence the use and effectiveness of the technology. These interactions show that AI is not neutral, but can become a central driver of corporate culture.

White-collar work in the focus of automation

With the spread of generative AI models such as large language models, intellectual and administrative activities are increasingly coming into the focus of automation. For the first time, technological change affects "white-collar workers", that is, employees in predominantly intellectual professions. Particularly challenging is that decision-makers often have to decide on the automation of their own tasks, which leads to a conflict of objectives, paradoxical incentives and resistance.

People at the centre

A common mistake when introducing AI is to neglect the human factor. Successful projects rely on a balance between technical and human adaptation. The ASK model (Attitude, Skills, Knowledge) helps to reduce fears, build up skills and convey knowledge. Early involvement and communication are essential.

Continuous learning as the key

Future-proof corporate cultures are based on continuous learning and adaptation. AI implementations require a strategic approach, change management and management support. Only in this way can AI be integrated sustainably to unfold its full potential as a driver of innovation.
