Digital Learning Journey - A case study

Deutsche Telekom wants to strengthen the skills of its junior managers in the areas of digitalization, new forms of work and digital collaboration. Can a digital learning journey be the key to success here? A case study.

The challenge: leadership in the digital VUCA world

The demands placed on managers are forcing them to position themselves more broadly - as ambidextrous visionaries, as self-initiating and motivating, as agile servant leaders. Digital, location-independent and scalable formats are needed to achieve these learning objectives for the globally distributed junior managers.

The solution: a digital learning journey

With a four-month digital learning journey, the selected high potentials were able to take part in various learning formats on a specially created virtual platform. The learning journey is based on seven digital leadership skills that have been identified as elementary for leaders of the future.

CPC was responsible for large parts of the conception, production and implementation. Our focus here is a fundamental mindset shift - away from 'analog' presence and silo thinking towards a mature approach to the digital working world of tomorrow.

Digital learning is characterized by self-determination, flexibility and curiosity. We therefore chose a structure with mandatory basic modules and free elective modules that reflected the story of the learning journey. There was also a video portal offering learning nuggets on additional topics.

In order to break down silos and promote company-wide networking, a cross-organizational network of participants was created on the shared digital learning platform. Participants were accompanied on their journey by mentors and guides to ensure a sustainable and in-depth learning experience.

We offer a variety of formats, e.g. virtual classrooms, videos, presentations, articles, instructions, interviews, podcasts and quizzes, to guarantee variety and fun while learning and to cater to different types of learners. The triad of knowledge transfer, skill building and reflection on one's own mindset lays the foundation for sustainable learning.

The result: a success story

Since 2019, the program has been held annually with around 500 participants from 19 nations.

  • Satisfied participants - Very good feedback from participants (4.5/5 stars)
  • Knowledge platform - long-term availability of all content on the portal
  • Exchange among learners - interdisciplinary, international exchange and Group-wide networking
  • Reduced costs - considerable economies of scale thanks to digital formats and media
  • Sustainability - Significant CO2 savings (28 tons)
