Oliver Kleinknecht is a partner at CPC AG, specializing in digitalization and AI transformation, project and program management, as well as change management and organizational design. Before joining CPC, he worked as a developer, architect, and project manager for a global IT service provider. His credo: Knowledge and experience are the foundation of success, which can only be achieved through hands-on action.

The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) presents organizations with far-reaching changes that affect not only technical but also social dimensions. In the October 2024 issue of changement!, Cornelius Klingel (CPC) and Tobias Krafft (Trusted AI) shed light on how organizations can successfully shape this change. It becomes clear that the success of AI implementations depends largely on how technology and people are brought into harmony.

Two levels of change

AI operates on multiple levels: it changes communication channels, task distribution, and incentives, which significantly shapes how people interact within organizations. At the same time, existing structures influence the use and effectiveness of the technology. These interactions show that AI is not neutral, but can become a key driver of corporate culture.

White-collar work in the focus of automation

With the proliferation of generative AI models such as large language models, intellectual and administrative tasks are increasingly becoming the focus of automation. For the first time, this technological shift is affecting “white-collar workers”—that is, employees in predominantly intellectual professions. A particular challenge is that decision-makers often have to decide whether to automate their own tasks, which creates paradoxical incentives, leading to conflicting goals, paradoxical incentives, and resistance.

Focus on people

A common mistake when introducing AI is to neglect the human factor. Successful projects rely on a balance between technical and human adaptation. The ASK model (Attitude, Skills, Knowledge) helps to reduce fears, build skills, and impart knowledge. Early involvement and communication are essential.

Continuous learning as the key

Sustainable corporate cultures are based on continuous learning and adaptation. AI implementations require a strategic approach, change management, and management support. Only then can AI be integrated sustainably to unleash its full potential as a driver of innovation.
